Mossyards is a family home set in the middle of the countryside. It was one of the few small independent farms in the area and so had its own steading and byre. It is just two miles from Gordonstoun where my wife and I teach. We converted the steading into two self catering cottages and have gone on making improvements.

WINNOW is the larger of the cottages. It is south facing and has two single beds. It is equipped with shower/WC, fridge/freezer, cooker, microwave and television. This was the area of the steading where the corn was winnowed as indicated by the opposing doors for the prevailing south-westerly winds to separate the husk from the grain. It is a charming cottage.

GABLE is very similar to Winnow except that it has a double bed and is west facing and so catches the sunshine after a day out. Everyone loves this cottage. When we converted the steading it was mainly to preserve the gable sandstone wall. Unfortunately I arrived home one day to find the gable wall had collapsed, while they underpinned it, despite a great deal of scaffolding. At least the builders didn't ask for any more money and we gained a little more space.

Recently we produced a patio with French doors onto it. People who used to stay in Winnow now prefer Gable!

Shopping: Duffus Post Office is under threat and it is so good to get your P & J and all national papers and anything you have forgotten from Tescos.

Pub: The Duffus Inn is much enjoyed by many of our visitors and you can be assured of good food and a warm welcome.

Moray is a world apart. It is friendly and peaceful, except when the jets from RAF Lossiemouth fly over. It does mean that it is a prosperous county and many multiple retailers are either already in the area, eg ASDA, Tesco and B&Q, but the best are the local shops such as Gordon & MacPhail for whisky, Walkers, the bakers and shortbread experts and a little shop called Made in Moray for souvenirs.
