Tobar na Mathar provides spacious, comfortable accommodation for a couple or family looking for a peaceful holiday on the doorstep of Callanish, Garenin and other unique scenic locations.

Tobar na Mathar (Gaelic for Motherwell) has been recently constructed to modern building standards with central heating and 100mm insulation. It is a self-contained annex to the rear of a renovated croft house, so is sheltered from the prevailing winds.

The accommodation is ideally suited for couples or small families, having one large bedroom, hallway/library, large open plan kitchen/dining/lounge area (with a sofa bed), utility room and bathroom. Our website has full details and photographs of the accommodation.

We welcome pets (with prior notice and agreement). The apartment is strictly non-smoking.

Your hosts (Jim & Fiona) are well travelled and understand the major contribution that a warm welcome contributes to an enjoyable holiday, so we try our best to ensure that you enjoy yourself, whether this is your first or return visit to Tobar na Mathar.

If you have any special requests, please let us know and we will try to meet them, and if you want to know anything about Lewis, please ask (in advance if you want us to check something out for you).

Located on a 6 acre croft on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis, Kabuis provides a one bedroomed self catering apartment and a two bedroom holiday chalet.

At the east wing of 25 South Shawbost is their original and most attractive self-catering unit in the space that was once Rhoda's father's workshop. A self-contained ground-floor wing. It's ideal for a couple, though further rooms are available by arrangement in the main house. Incidentally, the family home, with its attractive proportions and lovely woodwork, was built by Rhoda's father, Angus Murray, and is one of the most solid and original in the district.

The kitchen is fully equipped and pleasantly finished and the sitting room boasts interesting island books, a colour television and even some CDs to play on the stereo. The main bedroom is a double room, complete with immaculate en suite facilities.

Across the road is their second self-catering facility - a newly built, tastefully furnished chalet-style cottage, boasting one twin and one double bedroom as well as a spacious lounge - stocked with interesting books - the magnificently fitted kitchen/dining room and a bathroom with all conveniences. Ideal for, say, a young family, the cottage also boasts a decked, verandah area to the south and west where guests may particularly enjoy sitting of an evening before one of our celebrated local sunsets.

In both units linen and towels are provided and the price is, of course, inclusive of full central heating and gas-cooking; electricity in the chalet, being a separate building, is metered. The facilities are well maintained and the Macleod's "welcome package" for all new arrivals includes fresh and smoked salmon, together with fresh flowers and fruit, with the choice of tea and coffee and a selection from the day's home baking. A high standard of cleanliness is maintained and expected at all times

Oh, and - yes - Rhoda and Neil are delighted to welcome children and dogs are also welcomed by arrangement with a extra fee being charged.

Local amenities include Shawbost Free Church, to which most villagers still adhere - there are services at 12 noon and 6 pm each Sunday, the morning service being usually bilingual and that at night in English. Shawbost Post Office sells a few very basic goods; there is a more substantial shop off the main road at South Bragar, and an excellent one at Barvas, the Welcome In Filling Station.

Pabbay House is located in the crofting village of Back which is approximately 6 miles from Stornoway, the main town on the Island. It is a very central location and convenient for making day trips to all parts of Lewis and Harris. The house itself is on a main bus route. We offer our guests the opportunity to be collected and returned either to the airport at Stornoway or to and from the Stornoway ferry terminal.

The house has 1 double room and 2 twin rooms and can accommodate up to 6 people. The double room is the only ground floor bedroom. There is 1 spacious bathroom located on the ground floor also. There is a fully equipped kitchen with electric oven and hob, washing machine, tumble dryer, microwave, iron and ironing board, and a range of cutlery and crockery. The house is fully centrally heated with a wood burning stove in the living room. Linen and towels are provided for your stay and if you require a change during your stay then we are more than happy to provide a change for you. Pets are more than welcome in the house as long as they are kept downstairs on the wooden floors and kept out of the bedrooms. Children are also very welcome to stay in the house and if you require a cot for the younger members of the family then we will happily provide this. There is free WiFi throughout the whole house.

On a clear day there are outstanding views from the house across the minch to the mainland of Scotland. The mountains of Assynt and Sutherland can be clearly seen. One of the advantages of the Island of Lewis being situated in the North of Scotland is that between October and April the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis can be seen on a regular basis. Alternatively, again due to the latitude, the Island of Lewis experiences very little darkness during the summer months. In fact, around the turn of midsummer there is no darkness at all, there is a transition from daylight to dusk and back again to daylight in a very short period of time. To fully appreciate this one really has to experience it for themselves.

The house is ideally situated for all the outdoor activities the Outer Hebrides has to offer. This includes fresh water and salt water fishing, birdwatching, hillwalking, cycling, or simply enjoying the stunning scenery walking along one of the many beaches in close proximity to the house.

Bidh filte chridheil a' feitheamh oirbh! - A warm welcome awaits you!
